Whitney Ward Bascom (aka Whitterbug and Boog) was born April 13, 1989. She is the youngest in her family and her mom Muriel says that Whitney was such an easy child she probably could have raised herself! She is described by those who know her best as dedicated, independent, self motivated, hard working and adventurous. Whitney is passionate about exploring our beautiful, exciting and mysterious planet, and even married a “foreigner”. Marc says he is so glad he married her because she will get him out of his comfort zone! She collects national geographics and books about european history and world studies. She is now attending BYU and will be graduating in December with a major in…….can you guess???? World Studies and Geography with a minor in Travel and Tourism. She just finished a 6 week internship at the Marriott Hotel in Provo where she was learning all aspects of how a hotel is run.
When she is not in school she has two jobs-She is the secretary for the BYU Creamery on 9th –I wonder if she can get us free ice cream??? Or maybe a discount on cute trendy clothes at her other job-Charlotte Ruse (a clothing store in the mall)??? Believe it or not she has little time for TV and is never in danger of becoming a couch potato-however she does multitask watching her favorite episodes of Friends while she cleans and accomplishes other household tasks. If she has time she likes to cook, and Marc says shes quite good at it. Other current hobbies: She wants to go skydiving but Marc won’t let her-----yet! In April she turned 21 and after finals she and Mark drove to Cali to “get looped” because she loves roller coasters. She’s getting into running, ran a 5 K recently coming in 27th in her bracket, and wants to run a marathon next year. She likes to swim, go for a walk, hike, go biking and be outside doin stuff. Crème brulee, ice cream, and chocolate are some of her favorite desserts but with food she likes to try new things. Other things she likes: Shopping for new clothes and shoes and getting a massage. (She gives great scalp massages-to me!) One thing she doesn’t like: Utah drivers. Who does????
Her best friend was Rachel Bascom. Rachel introduced Whitney to her brother Mark, who soon became Whitneys new best friend and they decided to get married in August 2008. She still likes Rachel a lot though….
When she was in high school in 2005 Whitney did a pioneer trek and this is an incident her “Ma” related: She told me the thing/memory about Whitney that stood out in her mind was that on Trek they have a women’s pull where the men pull back-let go- and the women have to pull by themselves. There were only three girls pulling on Whitneys handcart. One girl was really heavy and was having a difficult time just walking, the other girl wasn’t much more help; but there was Whitney, in the middle, pushing with all her might up the hill and over the rocks. She later told her “Ma” that while she pushed and pulled she thought of the stories her Dad had told her about her ancestors--the women that had pulled the handcarts pretty much on their own across the plains. She said she felt them and their strength as if they were walking beside her. They also had a game to catch the greased pig—I believe she was the only girl that caught one-it was a muddy messy job and most girls didn’t attempt it.
She impressed her leaders with her tenacity and refusal to give up when others were dropping like flies. Way to go Whitney! We can’t wait to see what exciting things you do!
